Tweet: Paranormal Spring Break: Thank You/Conclusion Post Still 64 giveaways to enter until April 6th! http://bit.ly/fxUM5S #giveaway @tynga PLZ RT

We truly hope you enjoyed the Paranormal Spring Break! We might just do another in a couple of months =D

PSB: Guest Post & Giveaway with Andrea Cremer

PSB2

If you’ve been following me for a while you know I LOVE Andrea Creamer and her first book, Nightshade. Now her second book, Wolfsbane, releases only in July but I though inviting her to close the fest with me was a great way to tease ourselves with a taste of what’s to come this summer! Before I give the stage to Andrea, here’s a bit about Nightshade:

Nightshade1

Calla Tor has always know her destiny: After graduating from the Mountain School, she’ll be the mate of sexy alpha wolf Ren Laroche and fight with him, side by side, ruling their pack and guarding scared sites for the keepers. But when she violate her masters’ by saving a beautiful human boy out for a hike, Calla begins to question her fate, her existence, and the very essence of the world she has known. By following her heart, she might loose everything- including her own life. Is forbidden love worth the ultimate sacrifice?

Purchase: Amazon | Amazon Can | Book Depository

Now let’s welcome Andrea!

A frequent question I get is "if there was a movie who would your dream Nightshade cast be"?

It’s a super fun game to play and I do have answers. But before I give them, I have a qualifier:

It’s really, really important to me that readers envision characters the way they want to. The people I’ll mention here are just my ideas – but I love that every person that encounters the Nightshade pack will have their own picks.

Those who follow me on Twitter know that I’ve had Ren pegged for a long time.

(Ben Barnes)

Shay was eluding me. And how it pained me that I couldn’t find anyone who captured the way I’d imagined him!! Then the lovely Mitali (aka AlleyofBooks) introduced me to this guy:

Max Irons.
And he is PERFECT for Shay. *Swoons* I am sooooo happy. Thanks, Mitali!!
So there are the two lovely boys vying for Calla.

As for Calla herself, She was tricky too and I’m still not 100% convinced about this pick. The model they found for the cover was perfect. But in terms of actresses, the closest I’ve seen of the way I imagine Calla is this photo of Dianna Agron:

And there you have it.

And special treat – A WOLFSBANE excerpt:
Someone else. Now I wasn’t just hearing Ren’s teasing whisper. I could see his face and remember the way he’d pulled me against him the night I’d run from Vail. From the ceremony where I should have become his mate. He’d kissed me, pleaded with me to say. Where was he now? He’d lied to help us escape. I didn’t want to think about the price he’d paid for that lie.

Before you leave us Andrea, What’s your best spring break memory?

My favorite spring break memory happened in my third year of graduate school right after my now-husband I and got engaged we took a trip to Arizona. I found my wedding dress in Tuscon!

———————-

Thank you so much Andrea for stopping by! I love your cast and I really can’t wait for Wolfsbane!

Release: July 26th, 2011

This thrilling sequel to the much-talked-about Nightshade begins just where it ended.Calla Tor wakes up in the lair of the Searchers, her sworn enemy, and she’s certain her days are numbered.

But then the Searchers make her an offer, one that gives her the chance to destroy her former masters and save the pack and the man she left behind. Is Ren worth the price of her freedom? And will Shay stand by her side no matter what? Now in control of her own destiny, Calla must decide which battles are worth fighting and how many trials true love can endure and still survive.

PSB- Interview & Giveaway with C.C. Hunter

cchunter_hat

Today, the great Christie (aka C.C. Hunter) made us the honor to stop by the blog, and chat about her newest release (It’s releasing today actually *Squee*), Born at Midnight! Read along to discover more about this new series, some fun tidbits about Christie’s life and a giveaway!

PSB2

Born at Midnight, really sounds like an awesome book, can you tell us a bit more about what to expect?

KylieThank you, Cindy.  It’s such a pleasure to be here and discuss my book.  I have to be honest – I loved writing Born at Midnight!  As for what it’s about, well, it’s about a lot of things, really.  First, it’s about a teen camp for supernaturals.  It’s also about a young girl’s identity crisis.  Of accepting that everything she didn’t think is real is real and a lot of the things she thought were true turn out to be lies.  It’s about growing up, discovering who you are, what’s important to you and learning to deal with the mistakes you make, as well as the mistakes of our parents.

From what I gathered, we won’t know what Kylie is in the first book, but how does she discover that’s she’s not really normal?

Good question!  The biggest clue that Kylie’s troubles don’t fit into the ordinary no-big-deal trouble variety is that she’s acquired a very strange stalker–a scary-looking dude wearing army duds.  But when no one but her can see him, she starts to get worried.  Kylie’s eyes are really opened about the supernatural world when she arrives at Shadow Falls Camp.  Vampires. Werewolves.  Shapeshifters.  Even witches and fairies.  But the oddest thing is that all of them think she’s one of them, though they’re not exactly sure what she is.

Your story is set in a school for paranormal kids and I find myself wondering what do regular teen conflicts are like when shifters, vampires and faeries are involved?

The thing I worked really hard to do was to humanize all my characters.  I wanted the problems they faced, to be some of the same problems real life teens face.   From parental issues, fitting in, and accepting others to insecurities about how we look, and making choices about sex and who we should or shouldn’t allow into our lives.  Now, some of those problems get an extra layer when you’re dealing with supernaturals but the basics are still the same.

I’ve seen a lovely post on your blog on how you chose the title of your book, and I’m curious about how you chose your characters name?

Okay, I’ll confess, I’m terrible with coming up with the names for my characters.  You want to know Kylie2where most of the names come from?  From author names that just happen to be on the books lining my bookshelves beside my desk.  I’m writing and realize I need a name and I’ll glance over to my bookshelf and choose the first one that catches my eye.  One of my critique partners is always telling me that I need to branch out and come up with names that didn’t sound as if they were all from the same family.  LOL.  So with this series, I tried to come up with some names that were at least different.

I can only guess how hard it is to write a book, what’s your favorite part of the whole process?

Starting a book.  I love when I first get going and the characters start coming to life right on the page.  I love it when they suddenly won’t do what I tell them to do, because they’ve sort of gotten a life of their own.  Kylie did that when I wrote Born At Midnight, and Alone At Dawn, book 2 of the Shadow Falls series.  I’m working on the third book in the series and, yep, you guessed it.  Kylie is running the show.  Sometimes I just can’t type the words fast enough . . . and I couldn’t be happier!

Can you tell us 3 surprising facts about yourself?

Hmm.  Okay, I’ll give it a try:

  1. I was put in handcuffs once for throwing a bottle at a cop car’s windshield and calling him a pig.  Thankfully, I was getting paid to do it.  I was working as an extra on a movie.  I’m really not that crazy.  LOL.
  2. I speak fluent Spanish, so fluent that and I was once accused of dyeing my hair blond, and faking being an American when I lived in South America.  I swear I’m a natural blond!  (Although my hair stylist does have to give me a little extra help every now and then.  LOL.)
  3. In my past, before I wrote novels full-time, I worked as a photojournalist.  I’ve traveled to places like China, and France to do photos and write travel articles.

Last, would you please share with us your best Spring Break memory?

Okay, that one’s easy!  I had a crazy cousin who lived about fifty miles away from me and we only got to see each other during spring break and summers.  We were both good kids, but there was something about each of us that brought out the crazy in each other.  Every time we got together, we’d get in so much trouble, not like really bad stuff, but like the time we were twelve and she decided we were going to ride this horse that was in a pasture near my house.

So, did we go ask the neighbors if we could do this?  Oh, no, we took it upon ourselves and climbed the fence and just went for it.  I think she’d seen a western movie about breaking horses and she was certain all we had to do was climb on its back and hang on to its mane.  I wasn’t as certain, but I wasn’t about to let Jenny get all the credit for breaking that horse, so I went along with her plan.

Well, let’s just say we didn’t hang on tight enough.  Not the first time or the fifth time that old horse tossed us off his back.  Finally, he just got tired of our game and we got chased out of the pasture by a very ticked off horse baring his teeth, and we were forced to climb a barbed-wired fence in record time.  I still have scars from that day.  But I think those scars are prettier than those I would have gotten from that dang horse and his yellowed teeth.  Ahh, but the memories of those weeks spent with Jenny still make me smile.

Thank you so much Christie for taking the time to chat with us! It’s greatly appreciated ❤

Now here’s a bit more about her books!

bornatmidnight-final

Don’t miss this spectacular new series that will steal your heart and haunt your dreams,  Welcome to Shadow Falls camp, nestled deep in the woods of a town called Fallen…

One night Kylie Galen finds herself at the wrong party, with the wrong people, and it changes her life forever.  Her mother ships her off to Shadow Falls—a camp for troubled teens, and within hours of arriving, it becomes painfully clear that her fellow campers aren’t just “troubled.”  Here at Shadow Falls, vampires, werewolves, shapshifters, witches and fairies train side by side—learning to harness their powers, control their magic and live in the normal world.

Kylie’s never felt normal, but surely she doesn’t belong here with a bunch of paranormal freaks either.  Or does she?  They insist Kylie is one of them, and that she was brought here for a reason.  As if life wasn’t complicated enough, enter Derek and Lucas.  Derek’s a half-fae who’s determined to be her boyfriend, and Lucas is a smokin’ hot werewolf with whom Kylie shares a secret past.  Both Derek and Lucas couldn’t be more different, but they both have a powerful hold on her heart.

Even though Kylie feels deeply uncertain about everything, one thing is becoming painfully clear—Shadow Falls is exactly where she belongs…

Amazon // Book Depository

Awake at Dawn10

Please take not that even though this blurb was written by C.C. Hunter, it is not the final/official version.

Kylie Galen thought her life was a mess before she went to Shadow Falls Camp.  However, now that she’s discovered she’s not human, the problems presenting themselves are anything but normal.

She’s is determined to uncover the answer to her supernatural heritage, but with a ghost insisting someone Kylie loves is about to die,  her newly developed sixth sense telling her someone is watching her and a rogue vampire on a murdering rampage, Kylie’s quest for answers is on hold.   As if her life isn’t difficult enough, just when she’s about to give her heart to Derek, he starts pulling away.  When Lucas comes back, Kylie’s feels more conflicted than ever.   Kylie’s weekend with her mom should have been just the break Kylie needs, but it turns out to be her breaking point.   Finding out her heritage may not ever matter if she doesn’t survive.

Also, you can now get a shot story introducing the Shadow Falls world for FREE:

PSB: Interview & Giveaway with Jackie Morse Kessler

PSB2

Jackie’s books really stand out from the crowd because even though there is a strong paranormal element, her novels features delicate subjects such as anorexia and self injuring. Make sure you read along to discover more about her world and learn juicy details about the upcoming books.

A series about the four horsemen of the apocalypse is very unique, would you mind introduce us to your Lore? Have you done a lot of research before your wrote your books? Were there some sources with a bigger impact on your series?

JK: Well, the original source is from the Book of Revelation. But there are plenty of other influences—Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett’s fabulous GOOD OMENS, Piers Anthony’s Incarnations of Immortality, and Marvel Comics’ X-FACTOR are three big ones. One of the things I had to do was figure out what the purpose of the Horsemen were in my books, considering that I don’t really want the world to end in Armageddon just yet. 🙂 By the third book (which I’m working on now), many of the worldbuilding questions are answered. And by the fourth book, everything else will be answered. Stay tuned!

Anorexia and self-injuring, addressed in respectively Hunger & Rage, are very touchy subject, how did you approach them?

JK: I used to be bulimic, so writing HUNGER was very cathartic for me. RAGE was emotionally draining to write; I’ve never self-injured but of course I’ve had times when I’ve felt like everything was just too much to bear. I did my best to be honest with both books — there are graphic parts to both, because I didn’t want to shy away from the ugly reality behind eating disorders and self injury.

Have you been contacted by individuals or support group for those conditions?

National Eating Disorders AssociationJK: A few readers have told me that HUNGER really spoke to them because they used to suffer from an eating disorder. More have told me that they had never thought about eating disorders before reading HUNGER. The more that people start talking about things like anorexia and bulimia and self-injury, the more likely it is that people who need help will get the support they need. I’m donating a portion of HUNGER proceeds to the National Eating Disorders Association, and a portion of RAGE proceeds will go to the organization To Write Love On Her Arms.

Would you like to introduce your main characters to us?

JK: Lisa is 17 and anorexic, but she doesn’t believe she has a problem—even though she’s at the point where she’s hallucinating, her hair is falling out, she’s alienating those who care about her, and she’s picking fights all the time. HUNGER begins right after Lisa has accepted a strange parcel from an even stranger deliveryman, who tells her, “Thou art Famine. Go thee out unto the world.”

Missy is 16 and a self-injurer. Unlike Lisa, she knows she has a problem and is desperately trying to stop, but situations keep occurring that drive her back to the blade. Death comes calling and offers her the Sword of War.

If you had to pick a song to represent each one of them, what would they be and why?

JK: LOL, Nirvana is on all of the Riders of the Apocalypse book soundtracks. 🙂 For Lisa, it would be “Come As You Are.” For Missy, it would be “Jesus Don’t Want Me For A Sunbeam.”

Do you already have plans for the next two horsemen? Would you let us in on the secret without any spoilers?

JK: Yes indeed! I’m writing LOSS right now — it’s about a bullied teenage boy who is tricked into becoming Pestilence. And the last book will be called BREATH, and that’s Death’s book. **rubs hands gleefully**

And last, a question I ask to all my guests: What’s your best spring break memory?

JK: Oh my gosh. Spring Break was so long ago! But recently, my family and I went to Walt Disney World. That was tons of fun — even the waiting on lines for rides was fun! (Well, okay, maybe not that…) Hope to go again next summer.

Rage (Horsemen of the Apocalypse, #2)Missy didn’t mean to cut so deep. But after the party where she was humiliated in front of practically everyone in school, who could blame her for wanting some comfort? Sure, most people don’t find comfort in the touch of a razor blade, but Missy always was . . . different.

That’s why she was chosen to become one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse: War. Now Missy wields a new kind of blade—a big, brutal sword that can cut down anyone and anything in her path. But it’s with this weapon in her hand that Missy learns something that could help her triumph over her own pain: control.

A unique approach to the topic of self-mutilation, Rage is the story of a young woman who discovers her own power and refuses to be defeated by the world.

Victoria Carlton invested everything into her dream of becoming a singer—her hopes, her time, her life savings—only to fall victim to the harsh realities of the recording industry. PSB: Interview with Jennifer Archer

PSB2

Today author Jennifer Archer made us a huge honor by answering some of my question! You’ll get to know a lot about her and before we get to the good part, here’s a bit about her book ^^

Through Her Eyes

Sixteen-year-old Tansy Piper moves with her grandfather and her mother, a horror writer, to the setting of her mother’s next book–a secluded house outside of a tiny, desolate West Texas town. Lonely and upset over the move, Tansy escapes into her photography and the dark, seductive poems she finds hidden in the cellar, both of which lure her into the mind and world of a mysterious, troubled young man who died sixty years earlier.

Through Her eyes is your first YA book and I find myself wondering what were you like as a teen?

I liked to read and watch movies, listen to music and hang out with my friends. I was very shy, except with my closest friends. With them I could be myself – a little goofy, with a somewhat irreverent sense of humor, I’m afraid! But outside of that small circle of girls and guys, I was pretty quiet and lacking in self-confidence. And I was a “good girl,” for the most part. I rarely did anything that would get me into trouble. During my junior year of high school, I got a little bolder and more daring and sure of myself. Along with those changes came a little more trouble, as well! (But not too much.)

We all do things we regret at this young age, ever done anything tremendously shameful? Lol

103_0347Hmmm . . . now that’s a loaded question! I don’t think I ever did anything tremendously shameful, but there are certainly things I wish I’d handled better, and times I wish I’d been nicer. I’m not sure I want to share the more shameful stuff, so how about something more on the mischievous side? During high school, I once got revenge on a mean-spirited guy who liked to taunt me. We had a class together, and I got there early one day before anyone else, and I put a thumb-tack in his chair. Then I sat down at my desk and waited. By the time he came in, the room was full of students. He sat down, yelped, and jumped up! I admit that I enjoyed it; he wasn’t a very nice guy!

Your novel is about a ghost story, so Jennifer, in all honesty, do you believe in ghost?

I’m an open-minded skeptic.

Can you tell us about a particularly spooky moment you’ve had?

I was working on a story idea and I needed to learn about psychics, so I decided to have a “reading,” although I thought they were basically scams; I only wanted to do it for research purposes. I called a local woman I’d heard about and she came to my house. We sat at my kitchen table and chatted about very general things for a few minutes and then she got very quiet and looked past me over my shoulder, as if she was watching and listening to someone behind me. After a second or two, she asked me if a specific family member of mine had “passed on” recently, and when I said ‘yes’ she began to give me messages, supposedly from this person, about things going on in my life that the psychic could not possibly have known about and that my deceased relative also couldn’t have known unless he’d been “watching me.” Some of the expressions she used were expressions unique to him. It was eerie and startling, but also sort of awesome! That experience is what turned me into an open-minded skeptic, as opposed to a close-minded one.

What’s your favorite paranormal TV show?

I don’t watch a lot of television. I’m a big fan of movies, though, and some of my paranormal favorites are The Mothman Prophecies, The Sixth Sense, and Identity.

Tansy, Through Her Eyes’ main character, loves photography. Do you share that passion with her?

I enjoy taking photographs, but I’m not an accomplished photographer like she is. I don’t have a fancy camera, and I’ve never developed film in a dark room, as she does. I think I have a decent “eye” for a good shot, but I don’t have her natural talent. That’s just one of the reasons Tansy was such an interesting character to write. I love beautiful photographs and I’d like to take a class in photography so that I can improve. That’s on my ‘to do’ list, but I was at least able to learn a few things about photography through the research I did for the book.

Do you have any original or "off-the-road" past time?

101_0131My husband and I have a log cabin in the mountains in Colorado. He built it from top to bottom, inside and out, and we spend time there whenever we can get away. We both love to hike and ride four-wheelers. Our cabin is located near the Spanish Peaks, and one of my goals is to climb to the summit of the west peak. It has an elevation of about 13, 600 feet. I need to spend some time beforehand getting in shape for a climb like that, though! Maybe this summer.

What’s the craziest thing you’ve ever done?

While in college, I was camping out in the Palo Duro Canyon one weekend with friends, and during the middle of the night, I went behind a tree to go to the bathroom and sat on a cactus! Two of my girlfriends picked the thorns out of my butt using a flashlight and tweezers. (Yes, someone actually brought tweezers camping.) You know you’ve got true friends when they’re willing to de-thorn your bare backside!

Can you share with us 3 random facts we don’t know about you?

  1. When I was fourteen, a friend and I entered a talent show. We did a baton twirling routine to an old Three Dog Night song called Jeremiah was a Bullfrog.
  2. I sometimes write song lyrics for a talented singer/musician named Tennessee Tuckness, and she puts them to music. Two of the songs Tennessee and I wrote together are represented by Rescue Records, a business that places songs in films, television and commercials.
  3. I once lived in a railroad car. That’s right – a train car. It’s true!

PSBsmall2

Greetings and salutations! I want to say thanks to Tynga for having me on the blog today. Thanks, Tynga!

Spider's BiteI write the Elemental Assassin urban fantasy series for Pocket Books. The books focus on Gin Blanco, an assassin code named the Spider who can control the elements of Ice and Stone. When she’s not busy killing people and righting wrongs, Gin runs a bar be cue restaurant called the Pork Pit in the fictional Southern metropolis of Ash land. The city is also home to giants, dwarves, vampires, and elementals – Air, Fire, Ice, and Stone.

Books in the series are Spider’s Bite, Web of Lies, and Venom. Tangled Threads, the fourth book, will be published in May 2011, while Spider’s Revenge, the fifth book, will be released in October 2011. Also, Haints and Hob webs: An Elemental Assassin short story will be published in The Mammoth Book of Ghost Romance, which will be released in October 2011.

I also write the Mythos Academy young adult urban fantasy series for Kensing ton. The books focus on Gwen Frost, a 17-year-old Gypsy girl who has the gift of psychometry, or the ability to know an object’s history just by touching it. After a serious freak-out with her magic, Gwen is shipped off to Mythos Academy, a school for the descendants of ancient warriors like Spar tans, Valkyries, Amazons, and more.

The first book, Touch of Frost, will be out in August 2011, while the second book, Kiss of Frost, will hit shelves in December 2011.

Today, Tynga asked me to talk about how I come up with my character names. I have to admit that I’m not very scientific about it, especially when it comes to my first drafts. Usually, I’m just typing along when I decide to introduce a new character – and realize that I need a name for her.Web of Lies 1-6-10 small
Uh-oh.

I know that some authors spend hours researching names. Sometimes, I’ll do that too – or at the very least, go to one of the baby name websites and surf through the various names and meanings until I find one that fits the character. But most of the time if I need a name immediately, I’ll sit there and stare blankly at my computer screen for several minutes and try out various names in my head – trying to keep in mind all the other names that I’ve already used in the book. When I find a name that I like, that’s what I go with and continue typing out the story.
Scary, isn’t it? LOL.

But that’s what second and third and fourth drafts are for – to make sure that everything is as perfect as I can make it, including the names. Sometimes, I’ll go back and change a major or a secondary character’s name if I don’t think it’s exactly right. But if you’ve read my Elemental Assassin series, you know that my main character, Gin Blanco aka the Spider, kills a lot of people in the books – a lot of people. I’ll admit that I don’t worry too much about the names of the minor bad guys that Gin eliminates. If I could get away with calling them Bad Guy #1 and Bad Guy #2, I would.

Elemental Assassins Book #3 - VenomSeveral years ago, someone gave me a list of Welsh names and their meanings. I’ve used a lot of those in my books. For example, I got Gin Blanco’s real name (Genevieve) from that list. Genevieve means white or white wave, depending on which list or website you look at. I thought Gin/Genevieve was unusual enough to be memorable, and I thought it would be interesting that Gin’s name means white when so much of what she does is so very dark and ugly as the Spider.

Detective Bria Coolidge’s name (which I shortened from Briallen) also came from that Welsh list. Bria means primrose. Another name that came from that list was Eira, who is Gin and Bria’s mother. Eira means snow. Both Bria and Eira have rune necklaces that match their names – Bria’s rune is shaped like a primrose, while Eira’s is a snowflake.

So for the major characters I do try to come up with names that fit the character and her place in the overall plot, and I try to add in little touches to the story that add to the meaning of the names, like the runes I use in my Elemental Assassin books.

Actually, I’ve still got that Welsh list of names somewhere in my files – and I may just dig it out again when I start on my next book. 😉

What about you guys? What are some of your favorite character names? Do you like runes, etc. that tie in with the characters and the meaning of their names?

Jennifer’s best Spring Break memory:

One of my favorite spring break memories was when I was about 12 or so. We went to visit some of my cousins who live in another state. Spring break was also during Easter weekend that year, and I had a great time hanging out with my cousins, eating food, and playing softball. 😉

————————————

I love names and their meaning! My real name is Cindy which is a popular nickname from Cinderella but it also means Divine in Latin. Quite cool lol

Tangled Threads (Elemental Assassin, #4)

I’d rather face a dozen lethal assassins any night than deal with something as tricky, convoluted, and fragile as my feelings. But here I am. Gin Blanco, the semi-retired assassin known as the Spider. Hovering outside sexy businessman Owen Grayson’s front door like a nervous teenage girl. One thing I like about Owen: he doesn’t shy away from my past—or my present. And right now I have a bull’s-eye on my forehead. Cold-blooded Fire elemental Mab Monroe has hired one of the smartest assassins in the business to trap me. Elektra LaFleur is skilled and efficient, with deadly electrical elemental magic as potent as my own Ice and Stone powers. Which means there’s a fifty-fifty chance one of us won’t survive this battle. I intend to kill LaFleur—or die trying—because Mab wants the assassin to take out my baby sister, Detective Bria Coolidge, too. The only problem is, Bria has no idea I’m her long-lost sibling … or that I’m the murderer she’s been chasing through Ashland for weeks. And what Bria doesn’t know just might get us both dead …

Read the first chapter.
