"When I’m not writing…" with Vicki Lewis Thompson + giveaway!

Vicki Lewis Thompson

Today’s guest is someone who’s been on my radar for a while: Vicki Lewis Thompson. She’s written tons of books, some paranormal, others not, but she’s here today to celebrate her latest release, WEREWOLF IN DENVER, which is on shelves today! It’s the fourth book in her Wild About You series, which started last year. (She is prolific!)

Want to know what Vicki does when she’s not writing? Keep reading to find out — you may be surprised! — and to enter the giveaway!

DEVOTED TO THE MOUSE

Thanks so much for inviting me to blog today! It’s a special day for me because WEREWOLF IN DENVER comes out, but we can talk about that later. First I want to answer Jenn’s burning question – what do I like to do when I’m not writing?

That’s easy. I go to Disneyland! I’m headed there this month in fact! It’s my getaway from all things serious and professional, my inspiration to boost my creative spirit, and my best chance to act like a kid, which is where our creativity comes from in the first place.

Vicki Lewis Thompson Disney #1

I didn’t always realize that Disneyland could be such a creative shot in the arm. But that was before I went as an adult with my adult daughter. And no children. I know, I know, Disneyland is all about kids . . . but if you go with a child, you really need to focus your visit on that child or things get ugly. You know what I mean, jelly bean?

However, if you go as an adult, with one or more adults, you can (usually) eliminate any whining for toys or food and concentrate on the Disney magic. And it is magic. Walt was a genius who put into physical form the same thing I try to do on paper – he built a fantasy, one in which we can immerse ourselves for a few hours or a few days and escape our everyday cares and woes.

Doing that requires a lot of imagination, and when I walk around Disneyland and soak up the wonders that Walt’s imagination produced, I’m incredibly inspired. I can be in New Orleans Square listening to jazz, and moments later be riding the “wildest ride in the wilderness!” I can mount an elegant white steed on King Arthur’s carousel or blast off to Endor with C3PO. And let’s not forget exploring the Temple of the Forbidden Eye with Indiana Jones or gliding along the Nile on a jungle cruise!

Vicki Lewis Thompson Disney #2

The thrill I get from Disneyland is exactly the kind of thrill I hope to give readers, and if I could build you a theme park for each of my books, I’d do it! What fun I’d have creating the Stillman Lodge near Denver and letting my readers book rooms there and be introduced to my werewolves.

Because it’s not in the budget, all I can offer you is the book itself, WEREWOLF IN DENVER, with the hope it will transport you to a different world in the same way Disneyland transports me. Escape is good!

Where do you go when you need to get away? Are you able to physically leave, or do you find your escape in a good book?

Here’s the scoop on WEREWOLF IN DENVER:

Vicki Lewis Thompson Werewolf in DenverWhen Denver-based Were blogger and founder of Honoring Our Werewolf Legacy (HOWL) Kate Stillman agrees to take on political “bad boy” Duncan MacDowell in a public debate about werewolf segregation, she’s confident she’ll sail through the challenge without letting down her guard.

And what can go wrong while hanging out with the sexy Scottish founder of Werewolves Optimizing Our Future (WOOF) long enough to convince him his views on interspecies mating are mistaken? Plenty, when Kate discovers that she’s actually wildly attracted to her opponent—who by all accounts prefers dating human women!

But what hope can there be when this irresistible werewolf with a cause believes their future depends on Kate losing the argument?

  1. I definitely escape in a good book when I can't physically get away, but if I can swing it, I rent a cabin in the woods somewhere. I just love the peace of being in the shade of the trees and the quiet. (the shame…I've NEVER been to Disney….) Great post! smiles…

  3. When I can physically escape, I head to a guest ranch in central Colorado that I've been visiting for almost 20 years. There I sit on the porch of my cabin, listen to the river flowing by, and read. Heaven!

  5. I escape in a book every day, but to escape further, I love going away for a long weekend. Just find a hotel in a nice place, book a room, and pack my stuff (and books!) and my boyfriend and I are off for some relaxation. Away from daily chores and the computer.

  7. Each day I read a book after I get home from work just to unwind; we do try to get away but money has been tight lately so reading is sufficient to me.

  9. I like to escape in a book and sometimes it's hard to get into it when my kids are fighting or asking a million questions so I take to locking myself in the bathroom under the pretense of mommy's tummy hurts lol or I wait till everyone is sleeping quietly and stay up late 🙂

  15. Hi, Victoria! Just today on Twitter I *met* the artist who does my covers! Her name is Lucy Truman. I told her I loved her work, and she was so pleased! I send in some ideas to my editor, who passes them on to the art department. Lucy works from that.

  17. I'm a big fan or escaping into a good book, but going to the movies–lights low, sound thrumming all around, screen bigger than life…I LOVE IT! And with ticket prices as high as they are, it's becoming more and more of a rare treat! LOL Loved the post. Thanks for sharing Vicki!

  19. Paige, I love the movies, too! Talk about a great escape! I know ticket prices are going up, but if you compare going to the movies to just about any overnight vacation (well, maybe camping would be as cheap) then even the movies are a bargain.

  21. I am a big fan of movies as escapes, but I very seldom ever get to them, so I would have to say my best and favorite escape is a great book (and maybe a glass of wine)! Thanks so much for the awesome giveaway!!

  23. I love to travel so I get away pretty frequently to various places, but my books always come with because even when I'm somewhere different, I've got to be able to read.

  25. I can't really physically get away so I use books and blogs for that. If I'm reading about dragons and princesses and magic fairies I'm not going to worry about expectations.

  27. I do find my escapes in good books. They are a lifesaver when I can't sleep or when my back is hurting very bad so that I can concentrate on something else hopefully 🙂

  37. I escape in a good book the most, and since I live in Orlando, I have lots of opportunities to escape in some fantasy lands with all the great parks we have close by. When I can physically leave, I fly to California to visit my sister and her family, that's a really great escape.

  41. I have a corner of the house that I can sneak away to if I want to escape the noise and bustle of two children. I usually take a good book with me to help.

  43. If I can escape physically, I usually go to Jack Darling Park in Port Credit to be close to the water. I love that. If not, I'll enjoy a nice glass of red wine, cup of coffee, or a great book! Thanks for the giveaway.
